Handspinning Essentials If you would like to try your hand at handspinning, here is a list of materials that you will need, and some resources that will be helpful. Materials Needed: Fibre A good amount of fibre to start with is 110g/4 oz which will enable you to gain an idea of the technique before you try spinning fancy yarns. Carded wool is easy to start with as it has some "tooth", meaning the fibres grab on to themselves instead of being slippery, like some of the commercially "combed" wool top. Drop Spindle or Spinning Wheel A drop spindle is certainly the cheaper and space-saving option if you would like to try handspinning. Some people love using a spindle and never bother buying a wheel, as they can take their spindle in a bag where-ever they go, just like you would with a knitting tote. Spinning wheels enable you to spin a larger amount of yarn faster, and there are some foldable wheels which are easier to take to classes or wherever you like to spin away from home. They are, of course, a lot more expensive than a drop spindle. If you buy secondhand, be sure that the wheel spins without wobbling, and it should be fairly quiet. Our spindles come with simple instructions, 110g/4 oz of fibre, spare rods for the drop spindle (so you can spin a larger amount without needing another spindle) and a drawstring bag so you can spin wherever you go! Further resources coming soon!
